We Just Bought a 2017 S1000RR!! Part 2 12.04.2017

First ride impressions

Based on what we’ve seen so far the 2017 S1000RR is almost an opposite upgrade from the 2012 mid-model change.  The fairings and body work, from what we can see, are a 100% carbon copy from the 15-16 S1000RR.  The only exceptions seem to be a revised gauge cluster (new font and red “RR”) and a revised lower fairing to accommodate the redesigned exhaust.  We have fitted a 15-16 Akrapovic exhaust on our 2017 and it fits.  We also have a one piece belly pan from a 15-16.  We will try on next to see if it fits, all the holes seem to line up perfectly.  This seems to be a different mid-model change we saw from the 2012 that saw a new look, different seat, ecu, ecu strategy, electronics, power bump and better software.

The 2017, however, looks 100% different underneath.  Changes on the 2017 include DDC, ABS and suspension settings.  When we start digging into this, we will be updating you guys on what we find.  All the electronics appear to be fully upgraded to take this bike to the next level.

Riding our 2015 and our 2017 (stock) feels like 2 different motorcycles.  The 17 feels and transitions easier than the 15.  The 17 seems to be a more flickable and confidence inspiring.  We also noticed the 15-16 HP forged wheels were wrapped with Diablo Supercorsa’s.  This is a great tire! The 17 comes with a new Metzeler tire and they seem to be just as good, if not better than the Supercorsa’s.

As we continue to break in our 2017 we will first examine the 100% new ECU and its style of tuning, see what it responds to and its checksum difficulty.  We find the round connector that had traditionally been in the tail is now gone.  Meaning tuning and diagnostics will require completely new tools or adapters.  We have also found that normal scan tools for cars do not work well on this bike.

This is indeed a new machine and we’re excited to meet the challenge head-on to bring our customers the highest performing S1000RR’s on the street or the track.

  2. does the 2017 break in limiter time out on it’s own at the 600 mile mark or does the dealer need to disable it?

    I just bought one and the dealer assured me it times out on this years model. I don’t have a dealer nearby which is why I ask.
