Stock vs Torque Map vs BrenTuning
A customer of ours in California had a chance to test the new BMW torque optimization software update vs BMW’s previous software on the bike. We tested these 2 against each other and finally against the BrenTuning race calibration. The bike is a late 2020 S1000RR equipped with an Akrapovic exhaust system. Test runs were done in the prominent gears where the “lag” is most present (2nd gear and 5th gear). Testing done same day on all 3 ECU versions in the same conditions to show the differences in power. All 3 were overlaid and graphed below. You will see two tests per gear, both showing max WHP (wheel horsepower) points and mid-range torque points with a summary of the HP findings below.
From BMW email:
“FROM BMW –
The software was developed in response to customer concerns of reduced torque in 2nd through 4th gears in US models to meet federal noise emission standards.
Due to the new engine calibration the rated engine output will also be changed. However, the benefits of the increased torque will be a noticeable change for both street and track riders.
-Standard Engine Software 205 hp at engine speed: 13,000 rpm
-Torque Optimized Software 180 hp at engine speed: 11,500 rpm
BMW will be offering this new software at no cost to the customer for a limited time. This will allow the customer to experience the new software and decide which version fits their riding style. BMW will also return the vehicle to the standard programming upon customer request at no charge within 90 days after the optimized torque software is installed.”
The restrictions are still prominent with the new torque optimization mapping. You will gain a little mid-range (still not fully derestricted) but at the expense of your top-end power (minus 15-20whp up top) due to sound, assuming bike was too loud prior. There are no changes to the software other then throttle limiting and a little power (in the mid-range only). Racing bikes (with no noise standards) can remove these restrictions and use different calibrations.
