Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Fuel Controllers
-So what does a Power Commander or Bazazz do? (hereafter referred to as “controller”)
These controllers are a piggyback fueling solution. When the ECU commands a certain amount of fuel from the bike, the controller will modify the signal going to the injector and add or subtract fuel based on user provided fuel mapping.
-How do I know what to modify the fuel table to on the controller software?
Just changing fuel cells with the controllers software without any data of what your bike needs is useless and in most cases will actually reduce engine power or cause mechanical issues if not enough fuel is present (lean air/fuel ratio). The only way to truly get power from a controller is to get your bike on a dyno with a device that measures the fuel mixture. This would be called a “wideband” and this is placed in direct exhaust gas flow to read the air/fuel mixture.
-If my friend has my same mods, can’t I just copy his map and use it on my bike?
NO, you can’t. Even if you had the same bike with the same mods, there are very small differences with the way parts are manufactured. Each bike needs it’s own custom tune if running a controller to get the most power possible.
-Can I run a Brentuning Moto flash without a controller?
YES. You do not need a controller with the Brentuning Moto flash. Some people like to squeeze every bit of power possible from the bike and those people can use controllers. Everyone else without a controller will still make great power! The controller is not needed with a Brentuning Moto flash. Brentuning Moto will ask you what modifications you have done to your bike, as long as you say you don’t have a fuel controller, they will provide the fuel mapping for you. This fuel mapping is based on years of R&D with road testing.
-Which is better to run with a Brentuning Moto flash? Bazazz or Power Commander?
Power Commander modifies fuel only. There are some Bazazz units that modify fuel AND ignition. With the Brentuning Moto flash, we prefer you to use a Power Commander. Solid product, works great, and does exactly what we need it to do. With custom tuning you’ll get the most our of your bike. The Brentuning Moto flash will handle the rest.
-I already have a controller on my bike with a map I downloaded. Is that still good to use with the Brentuning Moto flash?
NO. In most cases we will tell you to remove the controller as if it was never installed. HOWEVER, if you’re the person that wants to squeeze every bit of horsepower out of the bike, keep it. The mapping you already have on the bike will not work with the brentuning Moto flash though. It will require custom tuning.
-I installed my controller and left my factory lambda sensors (O2 sensors) enabled in the bike. Is that okay?
NO. The motorcycle reads the air/fuel ratio and adjusts itself to what the ECU commands. Let’s say your bike is trying to target a 12.8 air/fuel ratio but your fuel controller is telling the injectors to take away fuel instead of add fuel. This causes the ECU to keep compensating until it reaches a commanded air/fuel ratio. Because the controller and the ECU do not directly communicate with one another, they will keep fighting each other and the result is no power. If a fuel controller is added, the lambda (O2) sensors need to be disabled completely.
-If I get the Brentuning Moto flash, can I just download a map and use it to help the flash?
NO. With a Brentuning Moto flash you HAVE TO get custom dyno tuning. If not, the bike WILL NOT make advertised power.
-If I tell Brentuning Moto I have a controller but I don’t put any map in it, will it still make good power?
NO. If you tell Brentuning Moto that you are providing custom fuel mapping, we will not add our fuel mapping to the flash. This means to get advertised power, you have to have a custom dyno tune.
-Can I tune it myself?
No. Unless you have a strong understanding of the S1000RR we strongly recommend you do not tune it yourself as you will make no power and may damage the engine from improper fueling.
-If I have an Auto Tuner, do I really need a custom tune?
The Auto Tuner is meant to target a commanded air/fuel ratio based on a wideband sensor you will have to weld into your bike’s exhaust system. We have found that even this device has issues without a custom tune. To get the most power possible, it is best to get a custom tune. If you are unable to get a custom tune and are running an Auto Tuner, we recommend you uninstall the Auto Tune and controller. Our fueling from the flash will make plenty of power without it.
-If I’m using a controller, who should I take my bike to for tuning?
This is VERY important. Whomever you take your motorcycle to needs to have a deep understanding of the S1000RR. If the tuner you have in mind just does Japanese bikes, do not take it to them. The S1000RR requires a deeper understanding of the motorcycle and ECU to adjust the air/fuel ratio properly. These bikes do not act like GSXR or a ZX-10 on the dyno. If you’re confused or unsure on who you should take it to, ask us! We can direct you to a dyno operator that can get your bike making the most power possible.
-If I can’t find a tuner but still want every bit of power from the bike with a fuel controller, what can I do?
Let us know! We may have solutions that will work for you!
