What Is Stage 1?

Introducing our inaugural flash for the 2020+ BMW S1000XR! Utilizing our decade of experience and research into the BMW ECU’s has helped us A LOT to develop the 2020 XR Stage 1 Flash.

US and European model S1000RR’s have been restricted from the factory, with the US models having some of the worst restrictions we have ever seen on a BMW liter bike short of the 2017+ BMW K1600. These restrictions are due to many factors; insurance, safety and noise regulations (US models) as well as EURO4 regulations (Euro models). Stage //M+ was developed to remove these restrictions and unlock your S1000RR’s full potential for racing use only.

What’s Being Restricted?

There are quite a few software and hardware restrictions on the 2020 S1000RR and some of the restrictions work in conjunction with one another.

 

– Throttle Restriction

Throttle is restricted and has a lazy feel on tip-in riding.  BMW doesn’t do this to keep the motorcycle safe.  There are certain standards BMW must meet to sell the motorcycle to the public that involve sound and emission control.  Though not nearly as restricted as its bike brother, the S1000RR, there still is some slight restrictions in the ECU.

– Exhaust Valve

The exhaust valve is a double edged sword. It does good by making back pressure when needed but also hinders the 2020+ S1000XR from making the most power possible at mid to upper RPM. Why would BMW do this? Noise regulations. The valve closed makes the bike a lot more quiet than if it were open. Even slip-on exhaust sounds almost the same as stock due to this valve closing so much. Opening these valves for racing or spirited riding allows for some horsepower to be free’d up as they are both gear and RPM dependent just like the butterfly valves for the throttle. Lower gears will reduce sound and power and only opening the valve less then 100% even in high RPM’s.

– RPM Limiter

The stock RPM limiter is set to 12,000 RPM. We have been testing 12,500 without any negative side effects.

– Fueling

The 2020 BMW S1000XR fueling is set rich for exhaust gas temperature purposes than it needs to be from the factory. It is also set artificially lean at idle, cruise and warm up which may result in cold/hot start issues. The new S1000XR is factory equipped with 5-wire widebands and is very precise on targeting a specific AFR (Air/Fuel Ratio) through a closed loop corrective system from idle to redline. Being factory rich also helps it cool the turtleshell exhaust system and meet street standards. However, fuel can be trimmed for better result as it targets real time fuel corrections (think Dynojet PC5 Autotuner but better). This, luckily, is the death of the piggyback fuel controller as the factory system and is 200 times better and more effective per gear, per EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature), and per throttle position than any other aftermarket oxygen sensor deleted alpha-N piggyback system (Rapidbike, PC5, Bazazz) on the market.

– Heat Management

Due to the new exhaust system and idle/cruise air fuel mixtures the bike has it is a recipe to being constantly in the 215+F range and burning your legs while you ride, making it slightly uncomfortable anywhere you’re not going 50+MPH. We have solved this issue by adding our low fan temp modification to this flash level as a standard baseline feature along with different cruise mapping which has curbed temps extensively.

What Do We Do To Fix These Issues?

 

– Throttle Restriction

We remove the throttle restrictions across the board. This restriction is software based only and doesn’t require anything but a software modification on our side to remedy. As soon as you get your bike is flashed you’ll be able to feel the difference.  The throttle is also much more sharp and responsive after flashing, while still keeping all of your modes.

– Exhaust Valve

We still utilize the stock exhaust valve to give you maximum power but also open it up when you need to make peak power gains and the sound you want.

– RPM Limiter

We moved the limiter from the stock 12,000RPM to 12,500RPM. We have tested this extensively on the S1000XR and found that it’s still making power to 12,500RPM without any negative side effects to the engine. This is optional when ordering.

– Fueling

We program the S1000XR to target a better AFR (Air/Fuel Ratio) to make a little more power along with fixing drivability and idle.

 

Benefits:

– 8% horsepower gain across the RPM range (see graph below)
-Horsepower gained from exhaust valve management
-Cooler riding temps
-Potential cold start, hot start issues solved. Idle is smooth and consistent
-Improved throttle response in all gears
-Longer powerband from increased RPM limiter
-Better exhaust note (as bike is silent stock due to exhaust valve)

Dyno Graphs, Flashed vs Stock

 

The graph below represents dyno testing performed at a completely independent source.  We wanted to show that test results not only come from BrenTuning Moto but also can be seen on any dyno.

These tests were performed on a 100% stock S1000XR.  No exhaust, no air filter, nothing.  All tests were performed on 91 octane pump (testing conducted in Las Vegas).  All testing was done back to back.  No playing with temperatures or SAE to STD gains, etc.  You can see the gains are across the entire powerband for torque and horsepower.  8% gain in overall power is great for a simple ECU flash.

Stock – (RED) 150whp / 76wtq
BrenTuning Stage 1 – (BLUE) 158whp / 80whp

**WHP and WTQ means the power the motorcycle is putting to the ground.  Manufacturers use HP and TQ and this refers to the power being outputted by the engine only and is not a true reading of power.  After the engine of the motorcycle outputs its power it has to travel through the transmission chain, etc before it gets to the ground.  Because of this drivetrain loss, the wheel horsepower number is always less than the manufacturer claimed horsepower.

We start with our popular OBDII Flasher+ and fully customize it.  Thoroughly tested by our own engineers, not just for its function but also durability.  We purposefully dropped this thing about 100 times just to make sure if you accidentally dropped it, it would still be a usable device.

So why buy it when you can just send in your ECU for flashing and spend less? Let’s see the breakdown.


NO DOWNTIME

No need to send in your ECU or remove it from your bike at all.  You order the diagnostic tool, it get’s delivered to you, you flash your bike.  You never miss a day of riding and no effort removing the ECU.

 

STORE MULTIPLE MAPS

When you send in your ECU, you only get one map.  You might be thinking, “why would I need more than one map?”.  Storing multiple maps means you’re able to flash for different fuels.  If you’re a serious track competitor, we can work with you to get you different mapping for different tracks.  If, for example, you’re add an exhaust to your stock bike, we can email you a file that takes the new exhaust into account with the changes you need to optimize your S1000RR’s new modifications.

 

GO BACK TO STOCK ANYTIME

Not only can you store multiple race maps, you can also flash the original, stock file back into the bike at any time and for any reason.

A $100 remap fee will be charged for new mapping after a dealer updates your ECU.
